As usual, Room 101 is consistently learning and building on so many new concepts and facts. This past week, we read stories about The First Thanksgiving, identified facts about today and long ago, and incorporated lots of turkeys into our learning. We learned about the Native Americans, pilgrims and the Mayflower and had a thoughtful discussion about sharing. We incorporated this theme into much of our learning this week.
On on another note, Everyone did such a lovely job on their family turkey project! I am looking forward to hanging them in the hallway. :)
As a reminder, Ray School does not permit dressing up for Halloween tomorrow, October 31. We do have some fun activities planned in our classroom though!

We have been learning about bats this week, and integrating them into our math, literacy, and science areas. Ask your child if they know any fun bat facts!
We continue to bring in new literacy centers and games. I have several exciting new centers to bring in to our literacy time if we can control our voice volumes!

A delayed Thank you for those of you who signed up to help us chaperone our field trip to the Pumpkin Farm on Tuesday. We had a great time!
We not only got to pick out our own pumpkins, but also visit and let a variety of animals including rabbits, cows, sheep, pigs, chickens, and horses. It was a lovely escape from school back to nature.
We have been investigating the differences/similarities of pumpkins and apples. We learned how to fill out a Venn diagram that describes differences and similarities of pumpkins and apples based upon our very own observations.
We have fully integrated our literacy centers. We are looking forward to having parent volunteers this week. I will be sending out a reminder email about this.
Please remember to keep working on sight words and letter sounds with your children, along with remembering to work slowly and steadily with counting/ numbers. This will greatly assist them in their academic progress.

Field Trip tomorrow!!
Dont forget to pack your child a disposable lunch! A change of clothes and a jacket is also a good idea just in case :) We will leave at 10:15AM and arrive back at school around 2PM. Dismissal is normal time at 3:45PM.
If you have not sent your child's permission slip/$15 for the trip -- tomorrow morning is the last day! Thank you!

Your child should have received a document with the names of the Pumpkin Patch chaperones in their folder today. The chaperones are the following:

*Please let me know asap if chaperoning on Tuesday, October 18 will not work for any parents I have listed. The bus is supposed to leave at 10:15AM and return about 2PM. Students are asked to bring a DISPOSABLE lunch with them. If you are not on the chaperone list, but would like to - please stay tuned! There will be lots more opportunities for chaperoning/volunteering. I also plan to send out my parent classroom volunteer schedule by the end of this week. I sent home another volunteer sign up sheet with your child yesterday to be sure of parent availability hours.
* We have been having some accidents in 101 lately. Please be sure to pack an extra pair of clothes and underwear for your child just in case. :) If it is easier to keep your child's clothes at school instead of keeping them in their backpacks, you are welcome to do so. I just cannot 100% guarantee they will not be taken or lost. :(*

I just wanted to send another weekly update so you can learn more about what 101 did at school this past week...
The above pictures show our Apple measuring investigation using non-standard units. In groups, we went around the room counting the number of apples aligned with each object on our sheet. We paid attention to how to correctly measure something - being sure that we begin and end at each side of the object.
On Wednesday, we conducted a science experiment to find out about what happens when germs overtake an apple. We placed one part of the Apple into a zip-lock after rinsing with water. We then played hot potato with the other part of the apple. It was great fun! On Friday, we observed our apples. From far away, we could all notice how brown the germy Apple had become! We drew our observations again, and noted that some mold was beginning to grow on the germy apple. The non-germy Apple still looked yellow. We are looking forward to continuing to see what happens to the apples next week!
We also learned about the Apple parts - feel free to ask your kindergartner what they know. :)
In math, our highlight this week was making different ABC patterns. Some of us learned that we can make an ABC pattern more than one way! Please work with your kindergartener to help them learn this concept (i.e. Yellow, red, green, yellow, red, green - or green, red, yellow, green, red, yellow, etc).

Literacy: We are beginning to add more and more sight words to our reportoir. Our specific sight words we have been working on so far are I, Like, See, and The. You can help strengthen your child's sight word recognition by pointing out those words as you see print around you or by playing flash card games, etc. with your child. The goal with sight words is for your child to "see and know right away". We will work on sounding out more complex words which we are beginning to do in our October writing journals (i.e. tiger or baseball). I encourage all parents to remind children about the letters they hear in daily word usage. As children become more practiced in this area, they will feel more confident in sounding out words and attempting to write using developmental spelling (spelling how a word sounds to them). I will also be starting a sight word wall which will be a great asset, and I encourage you to do the same.
We read some awesome books about apples and apple orchards, including all of the wonderful things we can do with apples! In the story called: "Apple Picking" - the puppy Clifford wants to help pick apples at the Apple orchard but he is too small. However, Clifford is able to help put all of the bruised apples that fell from the tree into a pile. The farmer is very happy because bruised apples make for some sweet Apple cider!
Next week, we will continue our Apple theme, but will include pumpkins as well. If your child has any books at home about pumpkins and apples, they are welcome to share for a day or two. :) I am also looking forward to reading a couple of these classics with your children:

Thank you for bringing all of the apples! 🍎🍏 We have done a number of activities with this theme including making 3 kinds of abc apple patterns, learning about and investigating the parts of the apple, and a scientific experiment today that included playing hot potato with a peeled Apple (so we could get all of our hand germs on it) and placed in a ziplock bag. Then, we also placed a clean part of the peeled Apple in another bag. We are going to watch both apples and see what germs or no germs does to our apple parts over time! We also made a whole class graph, and found that green apples were our favorite color apple! Tomorrow we will do an apple stamping project and get to eat some too!
If anyone has any books about apples, or apple-related themes, please feel free to have your child come in and share them with the class for a day.
Field Trip Update: Thank you for the permission slips and monies that have been returned so far. I also refunded everyone $2 because the trip cost is now $15, as opposed to $17. Please find the receipt and refund money in your child's backpack. Ray School has helped us out with that $2!
The due date for the field trip is October 11, but in the event of an impending teacher strike, it may have to be held off. In the event of this happening, the cost of the trip will most likely be refunded to you, and/or we will reschedule. If you get the money to us by the 7th, that would be great - but if you would like to hold off until the 11th (if we have school), feel free to bring in then too.
Attendance Reminders: Please be sure your child comes to school on time so they do not miss out on any learning. Arrival after 8:50AM is considered a tardy. If you are eating breakfast in the morning with your child, you are able to come up and wait with your child in the classroom until our class makes it inside. If you go outside to meet us, you will enter a madhouse! 😊
Also, we know you love your little pumpkins, but we request you to take them to the door and have them arrive with their class into the building.

What Room 101 has been doing this week...
We experimented with a number of manipulatives and materials so that we could practice making patterns, graphs, and alignment crafts with differing shapes and colors. We are working on holding scissors and following lines as well as using just the right amount of glue to hold materials together.
The purpose of all of these different investigational activities is so that we are able to really understand patterns and math concepts with several different kinds of materials using our hands. This is the best way for children to grasp and maintain important foundational math concepts.
We read several read-alouds this week relating to social-emotional problem solving skills, colors, and shapes. We have been also singing our shape poems which I will add to this blog. Our sight words for this week were I and Like and next week the sight words are the and see.
We continue to practice our reading stamina by having buddy reading and independent reading. These skills will help improve our practice as we begin to recognize sight words and sound out words. Guided Reading groups and literacy groups will begin soon! We are still working on our voice levels during these activities so we can move on to rotating centers.
Homework will be returned tomorrow - October 3. New Homework will be sent home tomorrow as well and is due on Friday. Most of the class returned their work! Great job! Please remember to read with your child each day, and record on the homework sheet provided. Also, don't forget to turn the homework packet over so your child can practice writing their name.
Next week is Apple theme, so feel free to send one or two apples with your child as we have lots to do with them!

I will be sure to keep you updated ASAP as I continue to learn new information. Also, the field trip cost has gone down to $15! Ray School will be helping with the cost, so I will be sure to refund $2 to all those who already have paid me $17.
